Educational Workshops for Communication Programs

Communication Programs
Educational Workshop 6.5 Hours

Achieving Person Centered Care and Culture Change requires teamwork.  It is recommended that each facility train a Person Centered Care Team to implement the Communication Programs social model for dementia as well as administer and utilize data from the Reality Comprehension Clock Test.

Social Model for Dementia

  • The Communication Programs contains a brain stimulating curriculum.
  • Each exercise is designed to MATCH the elderly memory impaired person’s cognitive skills and abilities.
  • Communication Programs are a vital part of this social model for dementia.
  • Each student will learn the components of Communication Programs and recognize how to determine which level of Communication Programs is appropriate for each memory impaired participant.
  • Each student will identify how the brain stimulating exercises are incorporated into each participants care plan.

Recommended Team Members: Administrator, Director of Nursing, MDS Nurse, Restorative Nurse, Social Worker, Recreational Therapist, Activity Professional, Marketing Director.  Additional staff may include Rehab Director, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, L P N ‘s, C N A’s, Dietary Director, Environmental Director.

Practice of Standards

Practice of Standards is promoted throughout the Communication Programs.

A Supportive environment promotes resident/client/patient involvement and fosters relationships.  Maintenance of cognitive, social and emotional health offers independent opportunities.  An emphasis of Empowerment is enriched through creative self expression.

The Communication Programs offer pleasurable experiences and stimulation for the elderly memory- impaired.

Goals

The Communication Programs process stresses the enhancement of cognitive skill levels for the purposes of:

  • Orienting participants to their environment
  • Reinforcing participant’s memory: both distant and short term recall
  • Increasing attention span and focus
  • Developing problem solving and carry-over skills
  • Enhancing ability to remain alert

Measurable Goals

  • Will work more independently, completing a larger portion of the project task
  • Will remain involved in the brain stimulating exercise for a longer period of time
  • Will express positive thoughts, reminiscent memories, or pleasant verbal/non verbal responses- at least one per session
  • Will manifest fewer instances of catastrophic reactions (sudden anger/crying) during each session

When an individual has lost their ability to communicate effectively as a result of a chronic condition, this brain stimulating curriculum can open the door to the cognitive abilities that remain.
